Let’s talk about Fate for a moment

saber

For some reason unknown to me, I completely missed the US release of Fate/Unlimited Codes in September. It didn’t get a boxed release, though. It’s download only for the PSP through the PSN store.

I posted about this on facebook several months ago but had forgotten about it, probably because I am a bad person. But now I have a copy of it and I fucking love it. If you’ve ever played the Bleach DS games, it’s set up almost exactly like that. In a fight, you have a bar separated into three segments that fill up as you deal or take damage. Your special moves require at least one full segment to pull off. In Bleach it was for shikai/bankai releases. In Fate, it’s for Noble Phantasms.

This game isn’t terribly great, though. It appeals to the Fate fanboys. The most noticeable flaw is how easy the CPUs are. On normal difficulty(the game’s default setting), they put up almost no fight at all. That is something I would expect from the easy levels. It makes me feel like I’m actually good at fighting games. If you’ve ever played a fighting game with me, you would know that is not the case. laffo. Another thing that irritates me is the breast physics. Every time a reasonably well endowed woman moves even the slightest, her boobs wobble around like she’s from a Gainax anime or some shit. That isn’t natural! My last gripe is about Caster. She moves entirely too slow. She’s fucking floating over the ground. She should be zipping around the stage with ease. Instead she drags her ass. Even when ‘running’ she is slow. She’s not as slow as Sakura, but still. It’s kind of annoying, especially since I love the idea of playing a pure mage.

This game isn’t going to be the next great fighting game like Guilty Gear or BlazBlue. It was made for one group of people: fans of the Fate series. If you like the Fate series and own a PSP, do yourself a favor and buy this game. It’s only $30 and I think it’s well worth it. Also, it helps support the Fate franchise and maybe if enough people buy it we can get the H games officially released stateside! Go go go!

PS: Buy the DVD’s, too! And buy them for all of your friends. They’re in a cheap boxset now, so you have no reason not to, unless you hate Fate. And if that’s the case, then why are you reading this post?

Here is a preview of the game. It’s the best quality I could find on YouTube. The video quality is shit compared to the actual game, by the way.
